MPI on NYBlue is based on Argonne National Lab's MPICH2 . MPICH2 is an all-new implementation of MPI from the group at Argonne National Laboratory. It shares many goals with the original MPICH but no actual code. It is a portable, high-performance implementation of the MPI-2 standard.

Some functions of the MPI-2 standard that are not supported by Blue Gene/L include:

• Dynamic Process Management (creating new MPI processes) is not supported. In addition, the thread model supported is MPI_THREAD_SINGLE, which means that threads cannot be created.
• Remote Memory Operations (MPI-2 one-sided communications). ARMCI and Global Arrays are supported, however; see Chapter 8, "One-sided communications" of Blue Gene/L: Application Development for more information.
