Getting a Computer Account on New York Blue

To obtain a New York Blue computer account, users will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Request permission to use "New York Blue/L and P" or the "BNL Blue Gene/Q"

Everyone must fill out and submit the online form to request permission to use Blue Gene Computing Resources at BNL. You will receive an email response indicating whether your request has been approved or denied.
Please note that it could take up to a week to process your request.

If you have been approved, proceed to step 2.

  2. Obtain a BNL Guest Number

You only need to complete this step if you are not a BNL employee or do not have a current BNL Guest Appointment

If you plan to access Blue Gene ("New York Blue/L and P" or the "BNL Blue Gene/Q") from outside BNL you should apply through the Guest Registration System and request a Remote Computer User Appointment. The application is available online.

If you are a US citizen you will issued a BNL Guest Number within a few days. If you are not a US citizen, it could take up to 60 days to be issued a Guest Number, depending on your citizenship.

  3. Complete Cyber Security Training

Cyber Security training is available online. You cannot take this training until you have been assigned a BNL Guest Number. Although it takes about 30 minutes to complete the online Cyber Security training, confirmation of training may take up to 24 hours to process.

Do not proceed to Step 4 until the day after you have completed the training AND until you have read about the Computer User Agreement and signed and returned that Agreement.

  4. Apply for a "New York Blue/L and P" and/or a "BNL Blue Gene/Q" Computer Account

In order to access New York Blue Computing Resources you will need:
    • A "New York Blue/L and New York Blue/P" and/or a "BNL Blue Gene/Q" Account (whichever of these you're requesting) , and
    • An RSA SecureID Account
Note that New York Blue/L and New York Blue/P accounts are bundled: you must request an account for both of them (not for one or the other).
Please also note that if you desire one, a BNL Blue Gene/Q account must be separately requested.
Request these accounts online at http://www.bnl.gov/accounts. The accounts will be created by the BNL Account Management Office. Click here for more details.
  5. Login to the Blue Gene ssh gateways and the front-end host

Applicants will be notified by the BNL Account Management Office about the status of their New York Blue user account. Once the account has been set up, the user can try to login by following the detailed instructions that are provided in Logging In.
If there are any problems, contact the ITD Help Desk via email itdhelp@bnl.gov or call (631) 344-5522.

  6. Subscribe to the BNL Blue Gene users mailing lists

All New York Blue users should subscribe to the users mailing list. The list provides information about the hardware status of the machine, scheduled maintenance, unscheduled outages, software upgrades, network status, etc. The list is announce-only. The users won't be able to post any messages; they will only receive notifications posted by the admins.

Obtain a BNL Guest Number

The purpose of this step is to obtain a BNL Guest Number. If you already have a valid BNL Life Number or Guest Number you can skip this step.

You can apply for a Remote Computer User Appointment at BNL by completing the Guest Registration form online.

The Remote Computer User appointment will allow you to remotely access BNL computing resources but will not permit physical on-site access to BNL.

A few tips about completing the BNL Guest Registration form:

  • List Michael McGuigan as your BNL host (his BNL phone extension is 2695).
  • Associated BNL Department is the Computational Science Center.
  • Type of access requested is Remote Computer access only.
  • Questions about visas, passports, alien numbers and interpreters should be ignored.
  • Questions about insurance coverage and emergency contacts should be ignored.

Note: A Remote Computer User Appointment is valid for up to two years. During the last month of the appointment you or your BNL sponsor may apply for an extension for a period not to exceed two years.

When you finish completing the form a temporary Guest Registration Number (GRnnnnn) will be assigned to you. This is NOT your Guest Number. You must wait until you get your Guest Number before taking any training.
