The purpose of this step is to obtain a BNL Guest Number. If you
already have a valid BNL Life Number or Guest Number you can skip this
step.
You can apply for a Remote Computer User Appointment at
BNL by completing the Guest Registration form
online.
The Remote Computer User appointment will allow you to remotely
access BNL computing resources but will not permit physical on-site
access to BNL.
A few tips about completing the BNL Guest Registration form:
- List James Davenport as your BNL host (his BNL
phone extension is 3789).
- Associated BNL Department is the Computational Science
Center.
- Type of access requested is Remote Computer access only.
- Questions about visas, passports, alien numbers and interpreters
should be ignored.
- Questions about insurance coverage and emergency contacts should
be ignored.
Note: A Remote Computer User Appointment is valid for up to two
years. During the last month of the appointment you or your BNL
sponsor may apply for an extension for a period not to exceed two
years.
When you finish completing the form a temporary Guest Registration
Number (GRnnnnn) will be assigned to you. This is NOT your Guest
Number. You must wait until you get your Guest Number before taking
any training.

Apply for a New York Blue Computer Account
In order to access New York Blue Computing Resources you will need two
accounts:
- A Crypto Card Account, and
- A Blue Gene Account.
Both accounts can be requested online at
http://www.bnl.gov/accounts.
From the accounts page, enter your BNL Life or Guest Number and from the list of Account Types
select Blue Gene and Crypto Card. You do NOT need to select SSH gateway Access.
Enter any comments in the Comments box and hit Continue.
- Crypto Card Account - There are three different types of
Crypto Card tokens. The different types of tokens are explained in
detail in
Token Types and Special Notes for each Type.
The one most often used
by New York Blue users is the Software-based ST-1 Token. You may also be asked to provide an Email and
a BNL Telephone. If you don't have a BNL telephone, enter the BNL telephone of your sponsor.
Once approved, the BNL Account Management Office will
send the user two emails, one with instructions on how to use the
CryptoCard and another with the initial password. More information about
CryptoCards can be found in the
BNL
CryptoCard Token User Guide.
- Blue Gene Account -
The BNL Account Management Office will create a Blue Gene account after the Crypto Card has been created. The Blue Gene
account includes an account on the Blue Gene ssh gateways.
The user will be notified by the BNL Account Management office via email when the accounts have been created.
The accounts are usually created within a day. The most common reason that delays account creation is Blue Gene
Collaboration membership (see the first step in the Blue Gene Account application process).
